The SAM Splint is rooted in an ancient building principle: traditional splints are strong due to their weighty material composition such as metal, wood, plaster, etc. However, SAM Splint is comprised of a light aluminum alloy core sandwiched between two layers of firm closed-cell foam. It is flexible, yet when formed into a curved structure, it can provide robust and reliable support to any broken or damaged limb. This follows the rule of curved surfaces, the same engineering that makes tall buildings and bridges with I-beams and hollow columns instead of bulky steel pillars possible. A flat sheet of metal is pliable, but if crafted into certain ‘structural curves’, it significantly increases in rigidity.
