This nonabsorbable, sterile, surgical suture is composed of anorganic protein that has been processed to remove natural waxes and gums, dyed black, and coated with a special wax mixture. Silk Sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximating and/or ligation, such as cardiac, ophthalmic, and neurological procedures.
Injured tissues elicit an acute inflammatory response followed by a gradual encapsulation of the suture by fibrous connective tissue. However, the proteinaceous silk fiber may progressively degrade in vivo, leading to a gradual loss of tensile strength over time. Therefore, silk sutures should not be used for permanent retention of tensile strength. Before using any medical device, it is important to review relevant package inserts for indications, contraindications, warnings, and precautions.
